The best business analysis techniques are project/business specific. What's appropriate for one is not necessarily applicable to another. There are analysis techniques that may be used on different phases of a project that are specific to the complexity of the initiation, planning, implementation, or closure.
Deciding the best analysis discipline for your project will take some analysis itself. Without paralysis of analysis we'll determine the best application for your business. There is no one size fits all and we normally work with several types of applications, which are project dependent.
1. SWOT analysis - [ Wikipedia ]
SWOT analysis is a strategic planning and strategic management technique used to help a person or organization identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats related to business competition or project planning. It is sometimes called situational assessment or situational analysis.
2. MOST analysis
The MOST strategy is one of our favorite techniques. It's one of the most powerful tools that can bring a vision into reality. The reasoning is that this technique is very specific to each person on your team. The goals that are set, are realistic and achievable, and are accountable. It is a method that is a continuum, and helps your team climb the ladder to success by keeping focus.
There are several more techniques that will help your business succeed. These are just 2 of our top analysis tools that are used to keep you on top of your game.
3. The Business Process Model is actually a technique that can be used in combination with a few others. It is, exactly what it's name suggest. It analyzes the process. When analyzing the process, we prevent stagnation from showing its ugly head. Strategic planning, Business Model Analysis, Defining the process and designing it, and Technical Analysis for complex business solutions are defined by the International Institute of Business Analysis as the main modalities of the Business Process Model.
Analyzing your business or project is like having an Architect draw up plans for your house. He or She will know the local laws and requirements for plumbing, electrical work, HVAC, etc. If you draw up your own plans, an architect can improve your plans and make you compliant to local laws. Now you may decide not to pay for such an architect and just stick to your own plans instead. Doing so can lead to even more expense down the road, in terms of an inspection for home insurance, resale appraisals, or being in compliance with your state or municipality. For example, many local governments require that a dwelling cannot be over a certain height. If found to be non-compliant after you've already moved in, you will have a major expense on your hands. So pouring money into your business without some type of analyzation, may cause you to keep pouring your good hard earned money into a black hole.
The bottom line is that it is imperative, in todays hyper competitive world, that you take time to give yourself, your business, or your project the edge over others. If you have an idea and you move it into production, there will be someone else with the same or similar idea hot on your heels. The matter now becomes, who did their homework. Sometimes an analysis will make you tweak your plans. It's important to not fall in love with your ideas, to the point where you're not receptive to what the research is showing. With that said, it's equally important to understand that we are only here to improve, make efficient, maximize gains, find and target your audience, promote your brand, exceed expectations, attain your goals and ultimately make you successful.
